We're sharing a guest blog post from Grant Singleton, where he helps highlight 10+ ways that PangoBooks has leveraged AI as a leading marketplace for buying & selling used books. This was previously shared as a post in the community here.
Hey EM, we’ve used AI a lot at PangoBooks and I thought it would be great to share a post with examples.
Here’s a list of some use cases and my favorite (in no particular order) examples:
- Content moderation: Automatically get "eyes" (AI eyes) on every new listing to ensure compliance and quality. Do this automatically every time a listing hits.
- Fraud detection: Instantly perform deep analysis on every transaction to spot fraud patterns faster and prevent losses.
- Internal messaging spam prevention: Scan every message (text and images) for phishing, spam, or inappropriate content, taking immediate action proactively. We have caught a lot of spam and phishing at PangoBooks this way. has implemented something similar at SidelineSwap.
- Seller profile building (internal): Automatically enrich new seller profiles using AI agents that perform web research right after signup.
- Listing data enrichment: Identify and fix missing or incorrect listing data instantly upon listing creation. If it’s scalable for your marketplace you can even have an AI agent do web research for that specific product.
- Marketplace database building: Quickly create extensive databases for your marketplace even when no API exists. At PangoBooks, we successfully built comprehensive series and author databases entirely using AI.
- SEO: Leverage AI-generated databases (from above) to create numerous detailed pages, capturing valuable long-tail SEO traffic you wouldn't typically reach. This is SEO for scale not quality, I have not yet cracked quality that beats a person writing a blog, but you can catch a lot of SEO by having a lot of pages.
- Developer productivity: Drastically increase development speed (up to 10X) using tools like Cursor or other agentic coding editors. Small tasks can efficiently be handled by agents like Devin. I personally only write 10% of the code I ship now, AI writes 90%.
- Review summaries: Automatically generate product review summaries so buyers can quickly read what everyone collectively thinks about the product.
- AI shopping assistant: Offer an AI-powered in-app chat that assists users in quickly finding exactly what they need, especially powerful when combined with advanced search capabilities. At PangoBooks, we successfully used this to help buyers find multiple books from a single seller.
- Internal operations automation: Deploy AI agents to fully automate routine internal operations, reclaiming valuable team hours each week. This one is a huge time saver if done right. At PangoBooks we have completely automated internal ops work that used to take the team hours per week.
- Customer support automation: Integrate tools like Intercom's Fin to provide immediate support by consuming help documentation, looking up orders, providing tracking information, and even handling simple actions like order cancellations.
I'm curious to know if anyone here is already using these AI applications, or if you’ve found other innovative use cases. I'd love to learn about your experiences in the replies below and new ideas!
